Why does heat relieve period pain?

Pourquoi la chaleur soulage les douleurs de règles ?

Every month, millions of women experience menstrual pain. For some, it's a mild discomfort. For others, this pain can be intense enough to disrupt their daily lives, work, or studies.

But why is heat so often recommended to relieve painful periods?

Heat helps muscles relax

During menstruation, the uterus contracts to shed the uterine lining. These contractions are caused by substances called prostaglandins, which can cause the cramps felt in the lower abdomen.

Heat acts directly on these tensions.

It relaxes muscles, improves blood circulation, and helps reduce the intensity of contractions. As a result, the sensation of pain naturally decreases.

A method used for generations

Even before the existence of modern medicine, women already used heat to relieve their menstrual pain. Hot water bottles, hot baths, or heating pads were among the most common solutions.

Even today, heat remains one of the simplest and most natural methods to alleviate painful periods.

The problem: heat is not always practical

Even if a hot water bottle is effective, it remains difficult to use outside the home. At work, in class, or on public transport, it is rarely possible to keep a source of heat on your stomach.

This is why new solutions are emerging to allow women to benefit from the effects of heat while continuing their day normally.

Because deep down, no woman should have to put her life on hold because of her period.
